Havaners Miami gold aviator sunglasses with brown gradient lenses

Sunglasses Styles Explained

Wayfarer-style · Aviator · Round

Wayfarer-style, aviator or round? Three shapes have outlasted every trend going, and each one says something different. Here's how they compare, what they suit and how to pick yours.

The three classics at a glance

Style The feel Suits Lenses Havaners pairs
Wayfarer-style Bold, easy, goes with everything Round, oval and heart-shaped faces Polarised, UV400 15 colourways, from Phantom to H20
Aviator Cool, light, a bit of swagger Square, oval and heart-shaped faces Non-polarised, UV400 Miami, Malibu, Shadow
Round Vintage, creative, relaxed Square and angular faces Polarised, UV400 Equinox, Sahara, Oceano

Wayfarer-style sunglasses

The thick, slightly tapered frame that's been a style staple since the 1950s. It's bold without being loud, and it works with a suit, a hoodie or board shorts. The strong top line adds structure, which is why it flatters round and oval faces so well.

Ours are made using recycled ocean plastic, with polarised lenses and the same 141 mm fit across every colourway. Go all-black with Phantom, mirrored with Silverback, warm with Inferno's tortoiseshell, or bright with California and Turtle Bay. Aviator sunglasses

Teardrop lenses, a thin metal frame and a double bridge. Aviators were designed for pilots, and they've kept that effortless cool ever since. The soft curve at the bottom balances strong jawlines, and the light metal frame makes them barely there on your face.

Miami is the classic: gold frame, brown gradient lenses. Malibu is a lighter, beachier take, and Shadow goes all black for a sharper, modern edge. All three have non-polarised UV400 lenses. Shop aviator sunglasses, or read how to wear aviators.

Round sunglasses

Circular lenses with a vintage, slightly arty feel. Round frames soften sharp angles, so they look great on square faces and strong jawlines. They're the pair to wear when you want to look like you thought about it, without looking like you tried too hard.

Take Equinox for matte black that goes with anything, Sahara for rich tortoiseshell, or Oceano for a black frame with bold blue lenses. All polarised. Shop round sunglasses.

How to choose between them

  • Go opposite to your face. Angular frames balance soft features, and soft frames balance angular ones. Our face shape guide goes into detail.
  • Think about where you'll wear them. Near water or on the road a lot? Pick a polarised Wayfarer-style or round pair. Mostly city days? Aviators are a great shout.
  • Match the frame to your wardrobe. Black and tortoiseshell go with everything. Colour is for when you want your sunglasses to be the outfit.
  • Check the size. Our sunglasses size guide shows exactly how each frame measures up.

Which sunglasses suit most face shapes?

Wayfarer-style frames suit the widest range of faces. Their strong top line adds structure to round and oval faces without overpowering finer features.

Are aviators or Wayfarer-style sunglasses better?

Neither is better, they just do different jobs. Aviators are lighter and suit square faces; Wayfarer-style frames are bolder and suit round and oval faces. At Havaners the Wayfarer-style frames are polarised and the aviators are non-polarised UV400.

Do round sunglasses suit everyone?

Round sunglasses look best on square and angular faces, where they soften strong lines. On very round faces a Wayfarer-style frame is usually more flattering.

Are Havaners sunglasses unisex?

Yes. Every style, Wayfarer-style, aviator and round, is unisex.
